E-Cig Proponents Stage NYC Vape-In

The war between anti-smoking purists and the pro-vaping community is heating up. In New York City on Monday night a group of over 300 e-smokers staged a “vape in” at the Museum of Sex in Manhattan. The event was a protest of the brand new ban on the indoor use of e-cigarettes and personal vaporizers in the Big Apple.

The party was organized by Reason Magazine, Henley Vaporium and the aforementioned Museum of Sex. The city’s new ban on electronic cigarettes and vaporizers in public establishments technically took effect at midnight yet the participants continued their partying and vaping into the wee hours of the morning, but no one was cited for any violations. The ban is not actually as strict as certain cities such as Los Angeles

The issue is a complex and nuanced one. Unfortunately there’s no hard scientific proof that e-cigs are a more legitimate tool for overcoming tobacco addiction than any other type of smoking cessation aid. While the CDC and FDA have called for more research on the topic, the vape community is crying “Collusion” between Big Pharma and the US Government.

The FDA’s own report found that the toxicity levels in e-cigarettes are significantly lower than those found in normal tobacco cigarettes. However that study only tested two brands of e-cigarette and there are literally dozens on the market. One participant in the vape-in, Tara Lober from Brooklyn, was quoted as saying “This is a health issue but I see it as closer to a Civil Rights issue.” Lober said she currently smokes roughly three packs of cigarettes each month, but has begun a vaping regimen she hopes will help her eventually kick the habit.

We at Vaporizer-Review believe that Lober’s situation is one that many Americans share but are afraid to admit to. The fact is that the tobacco industry carries a very influential lobby in DC so their dollars will go a long way toward thwarting restrictive legislation if it’s in their interests. Another issue is the “gateway” argument which many politicians buy into which is the idea that personal vapes and e-cigs provide even more of a “glamour” incentive for children and teenagers to start smoking. However many e-cig manufacturers are carrying fatter and fatter wallets so it’s possible that the FDA and CDC will cave to pressure and enact specific legislation or tariffs that encourage consumers to choose e-cigs over traditional tobacco cigarettes.

I dont know if a vape in was the best idea. I get what they are trying to do but think that there a lot of different ways you could do it better. Protesting can work but I feel like they are just pushing people further away with stunts like these. Everyone should be free to vape their marijuana anywhere they want to but unfortunately that is just not the case, especially in New York City.
